PLANING FOR INSTRUCTION
INTRODUCTION
Planning of instruction refers to what the teacher does and prepares for presentation/
teaching of a lesson in class. Effective teaching depends on the effective planning of a
lesson by teacher. It is much more difficult than delivering the instruction. It is defined as
“Visualizing, Guidance, Managing and Decision Making”. The teacher develops lesson
contents to match them with curriculum standards.
Planning is essential not only in instruction but in all spheres of human activity. Planning of
instruction is the backbone of school administration. The success of teaching learning
process depend upon the careful planning of the teacher.
Teacher can present the subject matter in a logical, systematic and effective way.
Teacher can save time and effort.
Planning provides self-confidence to the teacher.
It provides opportunities for experiments.
Teacher can expect good instruction.
Teacher can impact quality instruction.
Planning reflects the teacher’s individuality and personality.
Planning of instruction has to be done in different stages having different purposes
and objectives.
They discussed as follows:
A. Year plan: Planning the instruction for the whole year.
B. Unit plan: Planning of the instruction of a unit.
C. Lesson plan: Planning the instruction of a topic or a lesson.
Year planning is a long term planning of the instructional process. Year planning is
prepared by the teacher at the beginning of the year for the entire academic year. The
year plan contains various unit for each months. While planning, the teacher should
have to consider the following factors.
The number of units to be covered during the academic year.
The number of periods needed to cover each unit.
The number of working days per term and for the year.
The number of days allotted for project work, seminar, assignment and
examinations.
The number of holidays in each month and during the academic year.
The objective to be achieved.
The resources available.
Year planning is a broad planning.
Year plan is the plan of arranging various units of a subject and the period to
them in an academic year.
It helps the teacher to give proper weightage to each units according to its
relative importance.
It helps the teacher to distribute the units of instruction to each in different
months.
Year planning keeps the teacher on the right track.
Year plan gives a lot of self confidence to the teacher as he/she planned for the
academic year.
It enables the teacher to cover the syllabus within the allotted time.
It helps teacher in making optimum utilization of the available resources.
A unit is related learning segment made up of a few lessons along with an outline of
its actual execution in the classroom. Thus a unit will consist of both the subject
matter and methodology of its delivery to students. Unit is not a mixture of lesson
plans but it is a compound form of them. Here the unit is broken up into smaller sub
unit called topics. Each topic presents a certain fact of the unit.
A unit should be meaningful segment of well organised subject matter.
A unit can be broken up into inter related sub units or topics.
A unit provides a variety of activities.
A unit provides a place of beginning and end.
A unit is unified and comprehensive.
A good unit stimulates further action.
A unit should not too lengthy or too short.
A unit is organised around purpose of the learner.
It provides a basic cause structure around which specific class activities can be
organised.
It provides an opportunity to the teacher to keep a balance between various dimensions
of the prescribed cause.
It enables the teacher to break away from traditional book teaching.
It helps the teacher to develop self-confidence and security.
It helps the teacher to present the various principles and concepts constituting the units
in an orderly and systematic manner without losing their continuity.
It saves time and effort.
It enables the pupils to see clearly the relationship between the various facts, processes
and principles that make up the unit.
It provides a variety of field trips, experiments demonstration and projects etc.
CONCLUSION
Planning instruction is like a spider web, where all of the threads are connected in a
carefully designed pattern. There are different kinds of spider webs just as there are
different ways to plan and deliver instruction and assessment.
This chapter outlines effective methods of instructional planning, but other methods exist
in the world. You may have observed a teacher teach differently, perhaps more
spontaneously, and enjoyed the experience. Keep in mind that all students are not the
same. What worked for you or your family or friends is likely not the best or only way that
teaching should be done. Teaching is challenging, complicated work, but with a solid
understanding of curriculum, planning, assessment, and instruction, teachers are prepared
to reach all students and move them to the next level of knowledge, skill and
understanding.
