TYPES OF DATA- QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE DATA

TYPES OF DATA – QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE DATA

 DATA

 Data can be defined as a collection of facts or information from which conclusion may be drawn.

 Data are measurement or observation that are collected as a source of information.

 Data is a set of values of subjects with respect to qualitative and quantitative data.

 We use data to be able to gather information for reference or analysis.

 QUANTITATI VE DATA

 Quantitative data consist of values representing counts or measurement.

 Quantitative data are data about numeric variables.

 Quantitative data can be expressed as a number or can be quantified. Quantitative data can be measured by numerical values. o Examples : Scores on test and exams e.g: 85, 67,90 and etc The weight of a person or a subject. Your shoe size. The temperature in a room.

 Quantitative data is also called numerical data.

TYPES OF QUANTITATIVE DATA DISCRETE DATA

 Discrete data is one that has clear spaces between values.

 Discrete data is countable.

 Discrete data usually involve counting a number of items, such as the number of book, computer, people, etc.. Example: Number of pages in a book is a discrete variable Shoe size is a discrete variable eg : 5, 51/2, , 6, 61/2 Number of people in a race is discrete variable.

CONTINUOUS DATA

 Continuous data is measured.

Continuous data can take on any value as it’s measured

 It is called continuous because it can take the form of continuing numerical readings (decimal values) Example: Length of a film is a continuous variable Temperature is a continuous variable Time taken to run a race is continuous variable.

 QUALITATIVE DATA

 Qualitative data is defined as the data that approximates and characterizes. Qualitative data can’t be measured. Qualitative data consist of words, pictures, and symbols not numbers

 Qualitative data is non numerical in nature.

 Qualitative data is also called categorical data, since this data can be grouped according to categories Examples: Colours eg: the colour of the sea Your favorite destination such as New Zealand, Hawii Names as John, Patricia,……

TYPES OF QUALITATIVE DATA NOMINAL DATA

 Nominal data is a type of data that is used to label variables without providing any quantitative value  Nominal data can be counted but not put in ascending or descending order (sorted)

ORDINAL DATA

 Ordinal data are the type of data in which the data values follow a natural order

 Ordinal data is data which is placed into some kind of order or scale.

 You can count and order ordinal data, but it cannot be measured like numerical data.
